THE BATTLE OF GUADALCANAL: HELL IN THE PACIFIC

The Battle of Guadalcanal, an air, land, and sea battle fought in the Pacific between August 7th and February 9th of 1942, was the first major offensive of WWII that tested American land forces vs. the Japanaese Imperial Army. It was a hard, brutal conflict for the 15,000 US Marines and 20,000 Japanese that were sent there, fought in an unforgiving climate of hot jungle, crocodile-infested rivers, and coral ridges- all teeming with malaria-carrying mosquitos and the stench of death. The men who fought there deserve to be remembered. Our sponsor: Zip Recruiter If you own any company, large or small, and you are looking for the right people, you can't do better than Zip Recruiter. FORREST FENN'S HIDDEN TREASURE

Welcome to another episode from 1001 Heroes, Legends, Histories & Mysteries-this one, a triple play of our 1001 Stories For The Road shows- and here’s what we have on tap for this episode: First up is Forrest Fenns Hidden Treasure, and this is a true story that’s been getting a lot of coverage lately- about a treasure that was hidden somewhere in the Rocky Mountains in the good old USA in 2010…a treasure containing over $1 million dollars worth of rare gold coins and collectables- all placed inside a small bronze chest and hidden somewhere in plain sight, in a public area, and not within a structure. Thousands have been searching for it as so far no luck, although 4 persons have disappeared or been found dead as a result of their search. Its been getting coverage because the body of a searcher just turned up a few weeks ago in June of 2017. The poem that starts you with the clues can be found at these helpful links (and below): Fenns Blog: www.oldsantafetradingco.com Dal Neitzel’s Blog: www.dalneitzel.com Our second show, titled NEXT STOP.MAYBERRY, is a nostalgic look back at The Andy Griffith Show, which is considered one of the 15 best TV shows of all time, and this episode provides the back story to the show and the actors like Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, Francis Bouvier, and Ron Howard, that you probably never heard before. And third, MR BOJANGLES, offers a look at the highest paid black entertainer of the first half of the 20th Century, and one of Shirley Temple’s best friend. His name: Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. If you would like to enjoy our new 1001 Stories For the Road show, here’s how you can join us: Apple Devices: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/1001-stories-for-the-road/id1227478901?mt=2 Android Devices: Add Fenn’s Poem: Below, is Mr. Fenn’s poem which encourages all to get involved with the thrill of the chase! As I have gone alone in there And with my treasures bold, I can keep my secret where, And hint of riches new and old. Begin it where warm waters halt And take it in the canyon down, Not far, but too far to walk. Put in below the home of Brown. From there it’s no place for the meek, The end is ever drawing nigh; There’ll be no paddle up your creek, Just heavy loads and water high. If you’ve been wise and found the blaze, Look quickly down, your quest to cease, But tarry scant with marvel gaze, Just take the chest and go in peace. So why is it that I must go And leave my trove for all to seek? The answers I already know, I’ve done it tired, and now I’m weak. So hear me all and listen good, Your effort will be worth the cold. If you are brave and in the wood I give you title to the gold. Good Luck! And most of all have fun! ADDITION: MARCH 1st Clue: “The Treasure is hidden higher than 5000 feet above sea level.” ADDITION: MARCH 27th Clue: “No need to dig up the old outhouses, the treasure in not associated with any structure.” ADDITION: MAY 3rd Clue: “The treasure is not in a graveyard.” ADDITION: JUNE 28th Clue: “The treasure is not hidden in Idaho or Utah.” Update: July 12th, 2015: The Treasure is NOT in a mine. Plus, click the following link for some other Forrest Fenn Treasure Facts, like it’s not in Nevada or Canada either! And don’t miss the past Questions with Forrest and the continuing ‘Featured Questions with Forrest’. Here, Forrest answers Questions from searchers, and so there is lots of additional information found in them. If you have a Question for this segment, please use the contact form, linked above. Weekly Words from Forrest Fenn is another continued segment to check out. Starting near the end of 2015, and for the next year, I will be posting ‘weekly words’ given to me from Forrest Fenn in regards to the treasure hunt. I feel these can offer guidance, advice, and a way to learn more about how Forrest thinks. It’s been said, learn more about the man, then maybe a better understanding of the poem’s meaning can be determined. Clicking Here (thrill of t...

THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY: THE TURNING POINT OF WWII, AND THE BATTLE THAT CHANGED NAVAL WARFARE FOREVER

This episode is dedicated to all the courageous soldiers and sailors who gave their lives for freedom. (#THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY) By May of 1942 Germany had occupied Europe and was attempting to bomb England into submission. Japan had attacked the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor just months before and had sacked the Phillipines , brutally killing over 10,000 surrendered soldiers and civilians. With half of the United States fleet damaged or sunk, Japan controlled the Pacific. Knowing that the US needed to keep a base at the tiny island of Midway, Yamamoto made plans to attack it, knowing the weakened US Fleet would have to respond, and in so doing, Yamamoto, with many more ships and superior aircraft, would destroy them. But Admiral Nimitz, planning the American response, had his own surprise planned for Yamamoto. Before 1942, naval warfare was fought by battleships and submarines. The Coral Sea and Midway battles, pitting carrier fleet against carrier fleet, proved beyond the shadow of doubt the power, range, and effectiveness of the aircraft carrier, and changed naval warfare and warfare forever. SHARK! (PT.2): US vs.THEM: WHERE THEY ARE, AND HOW TO SURVIVE THEM

Shark attacks have been steadily on the increase for the past few years, and many people believe that this increase is due to federal and state laws limiting catches and protecting predator species like the Great White and the Bull Shark. Environmentalists are fighting against nets that protect swimmers but catch marine life and fighting any efforts to cull certain shark populations, going so far as to say that with 5 billion humans alive, and only 5,000 Great Whites, we can afford to loose a few more human lives. Two opposing groups have formed- those who want to save human lives and those who want to save the sharks - hence the title "US vs. THEM". SHARK! : THE MANEATER OF MATAWAN, N.J.: THE ATTACKS THAT INSPIRED "JAWS"

THIS STORY IS NOT INTENDED TO SCARE PEOPLE FROM BEACHES! IT IS INTENDED TO INFORM. IN FACT, WITH ADVANCEMENTS IN BEACH MONITORING TECHNOLOGY AND INCREASED UNDERSTANDING IN SHARK MIGRATIONS...OUR BEACHES ARE SAFER THAN EVER. VERY FEW SHARKS ATTACK HUMANS. SURFERS WILL BE THE FIRST ONES TO TELL YOU THAT ATTACKS ARE EXTREMELY RARE. WHEN THEY DO HAPPEN, THEY MAKE HEADLINES, SUCH AS THIS STORY, WHICH ILLUSTRATES HOW THE U.S. CAME TO KNOW SHARKS. In 1916, coastal resort towns in New Jersey were experiencing a boom in business as trains delivered thousands of beachgoers to the hotels and businesses that were springing up to greet them. When a series of deadly attacks started claiming the lives of swimmers, scientists and news reporters at first had no clue what could be happening despite witnesses saying it was a shark...after all, sharks were a part of old sailor stories...they didn't really attack beachgoers. When the truth finally dawned on people that a huge maneating shark was taking the lives of swimmers, it set off a manhunt that has been unrivaled in history. Join us for part one of SHARK! and the story that many believe inspired Peter Benchley's book JAWS!. Part Two will cover the rise in shark populations on many coasts thanks to the efforts of many who understand the need for a balanced oceanic ecosystem, the methods used by beaches for safety precautions, and the status of shark attacks in recent years, which, when you look at the number of people who go swimming at the world's ocean beaches, are extremely rare. URBAN LEGENDS V: FREE CABLE TV? THE CLINTON BODY COUNT & OTHER URBAN LEGENDS

Those crazy, often twisted stories you hear from your friends about things they will swear are true, plus other stuff. Our line-up: 1. Free Cable TV? 2. The Flat Tire 3. The Express Train To Hell 4. Mr. Rogers- A Navy Seal? 5. Julia Child- A Daring OSS Agent in WWII? 6. Topless Woman in Disney’s Animated Movie “The Rescuers”? 7. Shapeshifter Account 8. Dog Suicide Bridge 9. Nancy Reagans Letter to Hinkley 10. A Well Planned Retirement 11. The Clinton Body Count Legend. Editor's Note. There are no facts here, only legend. And we make this clear throughout. Many times. More than 5 times, I believe. It is not meant to be political or hateful. But apparently some people are still offended by the mere suggestion that this strong and vibrant political family may have ever been involved in anything less than pure. Its very possible that this innocent married couple has never done anything wrong or unseemly since they entered politics in Arkansas. Yet the legends continue to swirl around them. We know this is unfair, yet we didn't create the legend. So if you don't want to know what the legend about the Clinton body count says, or you think it might make you angry and want to strike out at us, simply skip this portion. If it offends you, don't write a bad review that hurts the entire show. 12. THE LOST COLONY:AMERICA'S GREATEST MYSTERY: PT II MISSING PERSONS FOUND

In 1587, 115 men, women, and children came to the eastern coast of the New World to establish a colony for England. The ship that delivered them left, promising to return in three months with supplies, but it never came. When relief finally arrived three years later, the settlement was abandoned, with only one clue written on the walls of the palisade walls- "Croatoan", which meant that the colonists had likely merged with a nearby tribe which had been friendly to them. For years countless people have searched for clues which could reveal what happened to the colonists. There were stories, rumors told here and there, and dozens of theories. In this episode we explore the most plausible theory-that the colonists merged with the Croatan tribe for survival and protection, and we will interview Fred and Kathryn Willard of the Lost Colony Center for Science and Research in North Carolina, who are finding answers every day. Some of the answers will shock you. THE LOST COLONY: AMERICAS GREATEST MYSTERY (PT 1): THE DARE STONES

In 1587, 115 men, women, and children were delivered to Roanoke Island on the Carolina coast with the hopes of beginning a new English colony in the New World. Storms and war with Spain prevented any supply ships from reaching them for three years, and when the ships arrived, they found the fort deserted, and the word "Croatoan" carved onto the fort's palisade walls. The 115 settlers were gone, leaving no trace, until 1937, when a traveler named Hammond found a large stone at the side of a North Carolina road containing what appeared to be a desperate chiseled message from Eleanor Dare. More stones were found, each containing a clue to the whereabouts of the surviving colonists. They came to be called The Dare Stones. The first stone contained this carved inscription, written in the Elizabethan dialect: https://nativeheritageproject.com/2013/12/08/the-dare-stones-1-through-48/ Subscribe FREE and Review at iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/1001-heroes-legends-histories-mysteries/id956154836?mt=2 Catch all our archives at our home site: www.1001storiespodcast.com Gift the gift of time at www.lordtimepieces.com!!
