The end of this is all over the place. I still enjoyed it.
Published in 1914, there is some phrasing that may be unfamiliar. Also, the writing style is quite dry in places, though at about a third of the way through it I could ignore that, once the characters had been more fully developed and the plot more defined. I found this bland and disappointing with the occasional engaging scene that stopped me from giving up.
The two main characters lack depth and sparkle, and the male lead has a very passive personality. The latter chapters proved particularly unsatisfying. When the end came, my reaction was, “Is that
