The White Moll

Frank L. Packard

Book Overview:

In The White Moll Rhoda Gray, “The White Moll”, an angel of mercy who spends her time helping the poor in the slums of New York City is drawn into the criminal world when she attempts to help Gypsy Nan, who is not what she seems. Accused of a crime and on the run from the police, she must battle the most nefarious criminal gang in the New York underworld to prove her innocence. Populated by such characters as Pierre Dangler, the Pug, Pinkie Bonn, Skeeny, the Sparrow and above all “the Adventurer”, this story contains shoot-outs, car chases, adventure and enough suspense and deception to satisfy the most avid mystery lover.

The little round black eyes were shifty, they seemed to possess no pupils whatever, and they roved constantly; there was a hard, unyielding thinness about the lips, and the face itself was thin, almost gaunt, as though the skin had had to accommodate itself to more than was expected of it, and was elastically stretched over the cheek-bones.

"Well, I'm listening!" jerked out the man abruptly. "You knew our game at Skarbolov's was queered. You got the 'seven-three-nine,' didn't you?"

I listened to this book on the Forgotten Classics podcast. It was a lot of fun. It's dated and a bit trite but I enjoyed listening to it and I very much enjoyed Julie's enthusiasm. Most of the books she does on her podcast are books I would not read on my own and I like that very much. Her choices b

Wonderful light reading with a remarkable heroine. I listened to this as a serial on the Forgotten Classics podcast, which is appropriate because the book was originally published in serial format, so the cliffhanger ending of each chapter gives its full effect.

Old fashioned. Could be considered predictable, but really wasn't. Fun read!
