A great read about American society before the Civil War. Just about everything you saw in the movies and TV was pure fiction. Very few movies portrayed real Americans from that era.

A brilliant time capsule of the foundation of a young republic. Interesting discourse on the principles of Democracy, its flaws, and the path forward. Also takes quite an agreeable stance on the position of women in politics.

Everyone who lives in the United States should read this book. It illuminates the origins of our culture and relationships to one another. Beautifully worded and attention to detail is unmatched for a period journal from this time.
