7/22/09 - Started this book today with Edna. Already I am delighted at the similarity of old Cape Cod to old Vinalhaven Island - or what I imagine are similarities.

8/29/09 - Still enjoying/admiring the clever dialogue and repartee between the characters. Edna laughs a lot when I read this book aloud

I have almost ALL of Joseph Lincoln's books, and I love them. They are old books, and are quaint, funny stories that take place on Cape Cod, and usually involve some old retired sea captains, some romance, and some mystery.

Russians love their holy idiots, and maybe Jedidah (a.k.a. Shavings) is supposed to be the Cape Cod version, but man, what a slog this was. The lead character is the most grating, annoying, "sympathetic"protagonist I've read in a long time. You want to slap him, but if you did, he'd just apologize f

"Shavings" is a nickname given to Jed Winslow, the town 'fool' who makes windmills, weather vanes and carved toys. While he is slow of speech and socially awkward, in some ways he has more wisdom and understanding than the 'normal' population around him.

The setting of this story is a small Cape Cod
