I read all Hamsun novels back to back and this was by far, the most....unique. While most novels center around a rural life style this novel takes place in Christiania (Oslo) as did Hunger. However, this read is a much different focus than the down and out first hand account in Hunger. Shallow Soil

This was my first encounter with Hamsun and I definitely liked his writing. Though I was a bit bored reading the first part of the book, I really got into it later on.
