Shadows in the Moonlight

Robert E. Howard

Book Overview:

For a genuine Conan tale, full of barbarian craftiness, magic, fierce fighting and his berserker strength, this meets every criteria and is one of the best. Conan was raiding with the Free Companions when they were trapped and slaughtered by the merciless Shah Amurath the great Lord of Akif. Conan is one of the very few who escape by hiding in the mud of the marshes like a beast living on raw snake and muskrat. Luck, which seems to have deserted him, smiles again and allows him the chance for revenge and he eagerly seizes it, destroying his enemy with fierce strokes. Barely escaping his soldiers with the slave girl Olivia, once a princess of Koth, they reach a deserted island that holds many enchantments and strange dangers. Then the pirates arrive and things become even bloodier.

'Yes, I fear you,' she replied, too distracted to dissemble. 'My flesh crawls at the horror of your aspect. But I fear the Hyrkanians more. Oh, let me go with you! They will put me to the torture if they find me beside their dead lord.'

'Come, then.' He drew aside, and she stepped quickly into the boat, shrinking from contact with him. She seated herself in the bow, and he stepped into the boat, pushed off with an oar, and using it as a paddle, worked his way tortuously among the tall stalks until they glided out into open water. Then he set to work with both oars, rowing with great, smooth, even strokes, the heavy muscles of arms and shoulders and back rippling in rhythm to his exertions.

There was silence for some time, the girl crouching in the bows, the man tugging at the oars. She watched him with timorous fascination. It was evi. . . Read More

Another fantasy adventure Conan the Barbarian yarn by Robert E. Howard.

Short story. On the run from the army of Turan, Conan and fellow fugitive Olivia hide out on a small island in the Vilayet Sea. They soon find themselves stalked by an unseen terror in the jungles and threatened by a group of pir

Pure escapist pulp fiction. By this point I've accepted that Howard's writing is much better than what I presumed before I ever actually read any of it. This story contains all the elements that make a Conan story what it is, so either that's going to work for the reader, or not.

Girl went from being abused by some spoilt rich kid to being consensually tethered to Conan’s anaconda. Not a bad Saturday.

Conan is on the run, the sole survivor of his crew of mercenaries. When he sees a girl getting abused, he swiftly intervenes with deadly violence and they flee together to a seemingly uninhabited island. But they quickly realize they should have stayed away as pirates arrive on the island. And then

A great Conan the Barbarian story. The location is lush, the story has mystery, adventure, and sexual tension, and Conan is [mostly] at his best. Olivia is an intriguing and, thankfully, ultimately a brave companion for him, and I wish she was in more stories.

There's really nothing not to like here,

An enjoyable Conan story and while it isn't my favourite Conan tale of the ones that I've read, I liked it. I love the pure escapism that the Conan stories provide in spades. Robert E. Howard laced these tales with Adventure, horror, magic, action, monsters, pirates and provided us with just damn go
