I picked it up for "The Horla", and i was a little disappointing in that story (it might deserve 3 stars, but it gets 2 because I was unhappy with it). Overall I really enjoyed his work.

Being an ignoramus (see previous reviews on this bookshelf), I knew nothing about Maupassant, so I was excited to find myself unexpectedly reading a proto-weird masterpiece.

I like Guy de Maupassant's short story writing. But my problem with short stories in general is because they are short the author can focus on the character or the story (plot) but does not have the space to do both. If I cannot relate to the main character, the story is rarely interesting. His plot

They captivate the readers with its detailing and the lucid prose which captures the travails of the ordinary people enduring the miseries heaped most
