I think it could have been a "5." But, it moved a little slowly at times. There was a lot of time spent establishing the main character through his early experiences before coming to California. but, that could have been done a lot more quickly. And, it was fairly clear how the story would end from

Good story

I love it when an author can tell a story without profanity. Add that to the fact that this was a great story.
