The sullen mayor who reigns in hell, By mortals Pluto hight, Who thrashes all his subjects well, Both morn and eve, as stories tell, And rules the realms of night, All pleasure lost in cursing once, All joy in flogging, for the nonce.

the poems are very bright

7/10

This rating is solely for the poetry. I absolutely loved Schiller's imagery, because there is somehow very little of it, yet it is some of the most effective. With less of it, he takes those few images further. (One of my favorites, "The Artists", particularly took me places I never expected.)

Howeve

This book is a wonderful collection of some of the finest poems ever written. The famous ones like "Die Glocke" (The Bell) or "Die B_rgschaft" (The Hostage) shine as bright as the less known ones. This book is real value for money- and shouldn't be missed on any decent bookshelf.
