Philosophy and Fun of Algebra

Mary Everest Boole

Book Overview:

This short book, Philosophy and Fun of Algebra, is meant to be read by children and introduces algebra and logic. She uses the word “algebra” broadly, defining it as a “method of solving problems by honest confession of one’s ignorance”. Using this definition, Boole introduces, in a conversational manner, the concepts of logic and algebra, illustrating these concepts with stories and anecdotes, often from biblical sources. At times, her discussion seems somewhat mystical, speaking of the imagination and angels as messengers which guide one toward the next step in a logical investigation. Boole ends the book with a reminder that algebra’s essential element is “the habitual registration of the exact limits of one’s knowledge” and a call for the public to keep this principle in mind when encountering any situation.

CHAPTER 2. THE MAKING OF ALGEBRAS

Some people say that experience is the mother of Wisdom; but you see that

both babies cannot be right; and, as a matter of fact, both are wrong. If they could talk, they might argue and quarrel for years; and vote; and write in the newspapers; and waste their own time and other people’s money; each trying to prove he was right. But there is no wisdom to be got in that way. What a wise baby knows is that he cannot tell, by the mere look of a tea-pot, whether it is hot or cold. The fact that is most prominent in his mind when he sees a tea-pot is the fact that he does not know whether it is hot or cold. He puts that fact along with the other f. . . Read More

British Author Mary Everest Boole was a nineteenth century individual of her time. She was progressive in her thoughts on teaching, but stuck also on regressive religious thinking. While expounding algebra as a scientific method, she also wants the reader to accept Christianity as true without regar

Unexpectedly weird

Less about algebra in this book than I hoped. Lots of references to Biblical stories and cautionary advice for teachers and students. I think her actual math and logic are probably in other books. She had a reputation for influencing education of children in math and logic. Incidentally, she was als

Really interesting, and a great introduction for children. Unfortunate that it is laden with Christian propaganda.

This book taught me more about life than it it did about algebra but it was an interesting read.
