The Passionate Pilgrim, contains 15 romantic sonnets and short poems. The works contained, while disputed as to authorship are in this writer’s most humble opinion, among the best of the age.

Tempteth my better angel from my side,
And would corrupt my saint to be a devil,
Wooing his purity with her fair pride.
And whether that my angel be turn'd fiend,
Suspect I may, yet not directly tell:
For being both to me, both to each friend,
I guess one angel in another's hell:
  The truth I shall not know, but live in doubt,
  Till my bad angel fire my good one out.

Did not the heavenly rhetoric of thine eye,
'Gainst whom the world could not hold argument.
Persuade my heart to this false perjury?
Vows for thee broke deserve not punishment.
A woman I forswore; but I will prove,
Thou being a goddess, I forswore not thee:
My vow was earthly, thou a heavenly love:
Thy grace being gain'd cures all disgrace in me.
My vow was breath, and breath a vapour is;
Then, thou fair sun, that on this earth doth shine,
Exhale this vapour vow; in thee it is:
If broken, then it is no fault of mine.
  If by me broke, what fool is not so wise
  To break an oath, to win a paradise?

Sweet Cytherea, sitting by a brook
With young Adonis, lovely, fresh, and green,
Did court the lad with many a lovely look,
Such looks as none could look but beauty's queen,
She told him stories to delight his ear;
She show'd him favours to allure his eye;
To win his heart, she touch'd him here and there, —
Touches so soft still conquer chastity.
But whether unripe years did want conceit,
Or he refused to take her figured proffer,
The tender nibbler would not touch the bait,
But smile and jest at every gentle offer:
  Then fell she on her back, fair queen, and toward:
  He rose and ran away; ah, fool too froward!

These are surely the most underrated works by Shakespeare. Venus and Adonis and the Rape of Lucrece are both astonishingly good, so much so that I can't believe they're not taught more (or maybe they are?) I guess the difference is that they're much less subtle than the most brilliant moments of the

Great work! I loved the poems in this collection and I enjoyed them very much, especially Venus and Adonis!

There. I did it. I finished his complete works. I almost can't believe I did it, but I did.

I'm having crisps today. It's a special occasion, after all.

Faithful friend from flatt'ring foe."

The diversity of poems in this collection, some of them rather more alien to the modern reader than Shakespeare's plays or sonnets, makes rating this book difficult. The Passionate Pilgrim is a very uneven miscellany, only some of the contents of which are by Shakespeare. The metaphysical allegory o

To be more definative, this is not a bad selection of poems, but the material is rather harsh, especially for being about love, as two of the poems Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece deal with passion that is not love though often given that title. This is something that I have always liked ab
