I read this after seeing the review from another Goodreads member, as I'd never heard of this writer before. The story was okay, if a little predictable. The writing was often rather abrupt (people appearing in scenes without warning), but it wasn't terrible.

Yeah, I know. I had never heard of George Manville Fenn either. He was a writer and publisher during the Victorian era, best known, apparently, for his boys' stories.

This is a terrific novel. As near as I can tell, it was written during the 1880s. It features a credible, believable plot; well-drawn
