The Miser

Molière

Book Overview:

The Miser is a comedy of manners about a rich moneylender named Harpagon. His feisty children long to escape from his penny-pinching household and marry their respective lovers. Although the 17th-century French upper classes presumably objected to the play's message, it is less savage and somewhat less realistic than Molière's earlier play, Tartuffe, which attracted a storm of criticism on its first performance. Ten thousand crowns in gold is a sum sufficiently … (Aside, on perceiving Élise and Cléante whispering together) Good heavens! I have betrayed myself; my warmth has carried me away. I believe I spoke aloud while reasoning with myself. (To Cléante and Élise) What do you want?

Cle. Nothing, father.

Har. Have you been here long?

Eli. We have only just come.

Har. Did you hear…?

Cle. What, father?

Har. There…!

Cle. What?

Har. What I was just now saying.

Cle. No.

Har. You did. I know you did.

Eli. I beg your pardon, father, but we did not.

Har. I see well enough that you overheard a few words. The fact is, I was only talking to myself about the trouble one has nowadays to raise any money. . . Read More

Chciałabym, żeby ktoś kochał mnie tak, jak Harpagon kochał swoją szkatułkę

Gdyby Ukryta Prawda i Sekrety Sasiadow mialy wspolnego przodka to byłby to Skapiec

I strongly want to believe that I didn't like this because I wrongly chose the edition I read. I want to believe it was not well written and that's it.
It has been always said that Molière was a great writer and I have no doubt about it, but I was not
