A strange, short narrative of the marriage of Paul de Monerville with Natalie Evangelista, a marriage he undertakes out of pure love, and without heeding the advice of his longtime friend, Henri de Marsay. Marriage, according to Marsay, represents 'the annoying, irritating, provoking, aggravating, s
