I only read The Custom House.
While some passages rolled off my brain entirely, I found that I could understand most of it. The lengthy section comparing the fall of Hawthorne's career as a customs-officer to being guillotined was pretty good.

Read Custom House the audiobook as a prefase to the scarlet letter. It was interesting, but too political for my taste.
