. . .I did not like being left alone. There were many fresh grizzly tracks on the river sands just behind me, and I was afraid of the terrible animals, so afraid that I did not dare to dismount and gather some strawberries which showed in the grass at the horse's feet.

The passing minutes seemed hours. The tall sage-brush out ahead had swallowed Baptiste. By rising in the stirrups I could just see the backs of some of the distant buffalo. A sudden splash in the river made my heart flutter, and I quickly turned to see what had caused it.

Here and there between the trees and brush its glistening surface was in plain view, and through one opening I saw something more terrible than a whole band of grizzlies: an Indian crossing toward me. Tremendous!

Absolutely tremendous piece of American Literature.

A Thomas Fox and Pitamakan adventure

The author's parents died when he was a boy, and he went to go live with his uncle Wesley, who was a fur trader among the Blackfeet Indians. Schultz's uncle has married a Blackfoot woman, and she has a nephew, Pitamakan, w

Great Read!

This book is a "page turner" and provides great insight into the customs and practices and civilization of the Native American people who were swept ahead of the tsunami of the new american immigrants.

An entertaining adventure

I devoured these stories as a boy. A lifetime later they still manage to capture me. These adventures will endure with anyone who still dreams of those remarkable times.

J.W. Shultz painted a very vivid picture that was full of thrills to the end. I was especially captivated by the quick-to-love characters whose unique personalities gave the story depth. Young Thomas Fox and Pitamakan only knew of experiences of others so they had to recall each account and put thei
