Loosely based on the still-unsolved, tragic murder of Southeastern New Mexico Attorney, Albert Jennings Fountain in the late 1800s, Kelly’s novel constitutes the first true novel of the Western genre —beating Owen Wister to it by a couple of years.

The novel is part who-done-it mystery, part romance
