. . .Swanhilda.

I found her soon, sitting by herself in a gorgeous chamber. I almost pitied her when I saw her looking so utterly desolate and despairing; her beauty too had faded, deep lines cut through her face. But when I entered she knew who I was, and her look of intense hatred was so fiend-like, that it changed my pity into horror of her.

"Knight", she said "who are you, and what do you want, thus discourteously entering my chamber?"

"I am Florian de Liliis, and I am to conduct you to judgment."

She sprang up, "Curse you and your whole house, you I hate worse than any -- girl's face -- guards! guards!" and she stamped on the ground, her veins on the forehead swelled, her eyes grew round and flamed out, as she kept crying for her guards, stamping the while, for she seemed quite mad.

Morris writes like the great wallpaper designer that he was. His prose is interested neither in words nor events, but only in its own atmosphere, which it exists solely to continuously renew — like a fog machine. Un texte classique et fondateur de la Fantasy que je suis contente d’avoir découvert.
La préface de William Blanc est très éclairante et passionnante à lire (mais à lire après le texte de William Morris pour ne pas dévoiler l’intrigue du texte).

The story was beautifully written and the prose and imagery were vivid and wonderful but, in terms of plot, there's not much going on. In any case, it's a fine read, though not one you're inclined to remember afterwards.

Savez-vous ce qu’est le pays creux ? Non ?

I was enjoying the tale, then it took a turn I never expected. Doing so it easily ascended into the territory of greatness. This one is sticking with me.

This was definitely interesting. I did prefer the first part just because you can clearly understand what's going on. The second and third parts are quite whimsical and it was no easy task to follow along and get the gist of what was happening.
The lyrical language used in this piece was beautiful.

My first introduction to the world of chivalry , knights and enchanting narrative of William Morris!
Found initial and middle portions quite interesting even got shocked at some unexpected turns but ... Felt ending to be quite absurd and wasn't satisfied as a reader ( found plot to be very weak). No

Almost intangible, this piece of early fantasy sets places and moods that many later authors will use to create a genre. The story both starts and ends in the middle of things, and swirls around for a while reaching a partial resolution, but the ideas live on.
