"Forget it!" I nodded at the bartender and held up two fingers. "You need another drink," I said. "The thing is," I said, "Gilvey used to do that."

"What?"

"That cough."

She looked puzzled. "You mean like this?"

"Goddam it, stop it!" Even the bartender looked over at me that time. Now she was really mad, but I didn't want her to go away. I said, "Gilvey was a fellow who went to Mars with me. Pat Gilvey."

"Oh." She sat down again and leaned across the table, low. "Mars."

I've always valued scifi which leaves little to no hope when it comes to our endeavors in space. Sometimes it is portrayed as harmful to our physical shells and sometimes, as is the case with this novella, utterly devastating for our minds.

I am not really into short stories and this one did not proved any better. Still Pohl's idea that people travelling together in close proximity will grow to murderous rage is interesting and probably true.

But why does going to Mars make them hate each other so much they'd kill?

This short story is disturbing.
The narrators voice is clear and easy to listen to, he is a good story teller.
The recording quality is clear (no background noise), it has plenty of volume and the editing technique is seamless.
I listen to these short stories while walking to and from work.

I didn't think I'd like this story when I first started reading it. The main character came off as a real douche. But as the story went on I started cracking a smile. I found the story quite hilarious by the end.
