This was a fascinating look at the siege of Paris in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 and the following siege by the radical Paris Commune, all from the viewpoint of an Englishman who was studying art in Paris at the time. This book is the perfect mix of French revolution (think A Tale of Two Cities and The Scarlet Pimpernel) and English-ness (think Virginia Woolf and Jane Eyre).
