The Five Jars
M. R. James
Book Overview:
The Five Jars is the only novel written by James, who is best known for his ghost stories. It is a peculiarly surreal fantasy apparently written for children. While he is out walking, the narrator is drawn to a remote pool, and finds a small box that has been hidden since Roman times. He gradually learns how to use its contents, fighting off a series of attempts to steal it, and becomes aware of a strange world hidden from our own.

Here—shove the piece in again and rub it over—here he is!” (Very demurely): “O sir, we've got such a nice-looking——” (I could not catch what it was) “here; we thought you might perhaps like it, sir. Would you, sir?… Oh no, thank you, sir, we've had plenty, sir, but this was the biggest we found.”
A third voice said something; it was a deeper one and less easy to hear.
Number two: “Bitten, sir? Oh no, I don't think so. Do you ——?” (a name which I did not make out).
Number one: “Why, how could it be?”
Number three again—angry, I thought.
Number two (rather anxiously): “But, sir, really, sir, I don't much like them.… Must I really, sir?&. . . Read More

That concludes my reading of all MR James’ fiction! This was a fun little children’s story! I’d certainly have loved it as a child. Not really as weird lit’ish as some have stated tho imo.
A magical fantasy novella with a very dreamy atmosphere and setting, almost not scary at all, at least not creepy and not ghostly as one could expect from a work by M. R. James. I enjoyed the humorous writing and the multitude of magical and supernatural voices that one hears reading it, e.g. when t
Pesado e Infantil, no cuadra esas dos cosas juntas.
The Five Jars is something of an oddity in the oeuvre of the great ghost story writer and medieval scholar, M.R. James. Unmarried and childless though he was, he nonetheless took a godfatherly interest in his friend's daughter Jane and was therefore inspired to write this short children's fantasy no
