The Exemplary Novels of Cervantes

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

Book Overview:

Originally compiled by Cervantes himself in 1613 as a collection of "exemplary" stories, this translated version brings these stories to the English reader. Included in the collection are twelve stories selected by Cervantes, including "A Deceitful Marriage," which famously transitions seamlessly and humorously into the "Dialogue Between Scipio and Berganze".

The master finally embraced Rinconete and Cortadillo, giving them his benediction; he then dismissed them, exhorting them to have no fixed dwelling or known habitation, since that was a precaution most important to the safety of all. Ganchuelo accompanied the friends for the purpose of guiding them to their districts, and pointing out the limits thereof. He warned them on no account to miss the assembly on Sunday, when it seemed that Monipodio intended to give them a lecture on matters concerning their profession. That done, the lad went away, leaving the two novices in great astonishment at all they had seen.

Now Rinconete, although very young, had a good understanding, and much intelligence. Having often accompanied his father in the sale of his bulls, he had acquired the knowledge of a more refined language than that they had just been hearing, and la. . . Read More

Algunas me interesaron y otras se me hic...more

In the introduction, the translator argues that had Cervantes never dreamed up and written Don Quixote, his fame would be just as great for having written these short novels. I agree. They're charming, funny, moving, inventive and, above all, entertaining. The characters tell many stories that ma...more

Exemplary Stories is an excellent collection of novellas written by a legendary author Cervantes. Many novellas follow adventures of nobleman, often featuring a Cinderella moment. Similar to his famous novel, these prose works often feature brilliant social satire, excellent syntax, wonderful hum...more

Full of stories that enchant from the first sentence, inviting the reader to settle in, listen well, because one of the masters is going to tell a story. It's not always a happy ending for a modern reader; some of the heroines end up with men who eminently do not deserve them and some of the c...more

A collection of short stories. They are entertaining enough but do not come close to approaching the brilliance of Quixote. It's unclear why the stories are exemplary. Still, fun enough and better than most fiction probably.

How disgraceful is it that the only reason I can come up with to actually learn Spanish is to be able to read one writer's oeuvre in full? I refer to Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, of course, author of my favorite book of all time, "Don Quixote". (Probably, and only if this were the gun test, in w...more
