Anna Christie
Eugene O'Neill
Book Overview:
Eugene O'Neill's drama Anna Christie was first produced on Broadway in 1921. It focuses on three main characters: Chris Christopherson, a Swedish captain of a coal barge and longtime seaman, his daughter Anna, who has grown up separated from her father on a Minnesota farm, and Mat Burke, an Irish stoker who works on steamships. At the beginning of the play Chris and Anna are reunited after fifteen years apart. Anna comes to live on her father's coal barge, but hides the secret of her past from him. When she meets Mat after an accident in the fog, they almost immediately fall in love - but Anna finds that forging a new future will not be easy.

ANNA—[Pleased.] I'm glad to hear it. Then you think's he'll stake me to that rest cure I'm after?
MARTHY—[Emphatically.] Surest thing you know. [Disgustedly.] But where'd yuh get the idea he was a janitor?
ANNA—He wrote me he was himself.
MARTHY—Well, he was lyin'. He ain't. He's captain of a barge—five men under him.
ANNA—[Disgusted in her turn.] A barge? What kind of a barge?
MARTHY—Coal, mostly.
ANNA—A coal barge! [With a harsh laugh.] If that ain't a swell job to find your long lost Old Man working at! Gee, I knew something'd be bound to turn out wrong—always does with me. That puts my idea of his giving me a rest on the bum.
MARTHY—What d'yuh mean?

I'd never seen nor read this 1922 Pulitzer Prize winning play, which was also awarded a Tony Award for best revival in 1993, but I listened to a good audio version this morning. I suspect--having seen a few of O'Neill's plays years ago, that this will not be considered one of his best, but it was en
Most people know Anna Christie as the Garbo movie where the actress demanded "Give me a whiskey, ginger ale on the side --and don't be stingy, baby."
The acerbic line comes straight from O'Neill's play, but the real salt comes from Anna's father, a cartoonish sailor with lines written in Swedish Chef
And it has even an extraordinary happy enfing!!!
