Molière mythologique

M’étant mis en tête de lire les grands chefs-d’oeuvre de Molière, je n’avais pas inclu Amphitryon dans la liste. Jusqu’à ce que j’ai vu qu’elle faisait partie des dix pièces magistralement traduites en anglais par le poète américain Richard Wilbur.

Moi qui suis fan de Molière, je le découvre autrement. Ce n'est clairement pas sa meilleure pièce à mon goût.
Ici, Amphitryon sort de l'esthétisme traditionnelle de la comédie car nous n'avons plus l'étude d'un caractère, une pièce en 3 actes, le cadre spatio-temporel et la question de la vraisemblan

Which is to say its the story of how a god disguises himself and basically rapes a woman.

Now, if we put that all aside, and if we look at it as an ancient story retold by Molière, then this is a pretty good "minor" play, probably among my favor

If I was allowed ONE book to keep on a deserted island, the Works of Shakespeare OR the Works of Moliere, it would be Moliere.....in English, of course.

The poets do what pleases them. It is not the only stupidity we have detected in these gentlemen.
