The Amazing Interlude

Mary Roberts Rinehart

Book Overview:

It is the early days of The Great War. As the curtain rises, Sara Lee is sitting by the fire in her aunt and uncle’s home, knitting a baby afghan. Her beau’s name is Harvey. He has his eye on a little house that is just perfect for two and he will soon propose to Sara Lee. But in this play, the mise en scène is about to change. A fairyland transformation will take place and Sara Lee will step into a new and different story, where she is the princess in a forest of adventure. There is a prince, too, whose name is Henri. He is as strange as the forest itself. And then just as suddenly, the scene changes back and Sara Lee is once again sitting alone by the fire, knitting socks for the soldiers this time, and with a memory and a new stirring in her heart. This is the story of Sara Lee’s amazing interlude.

. . .Henri. "But now that I am here I do not know."

His eyes were keen. Sara Lee had suddenly a strange feeling that he was watching the couple who talked over their coffee, and that, oddly enough, the couple were watching him. Yet he was apparently giving his undivided attention to her.

"Have you walked any to-day?" he asked her unexpectedly.

Sara Lee remembered the bus, and, with some bitterness, the two taxis.

"I haven't had a chance to walk," she said.

"But you should walk," he said. "I—will you walk with me? Just about the square, for air?" And in a lower tone: "It is not necessary that those two should know the plan, mademoiselle."

"I'll get my coat and hat," Sara Lee said, and proceeded to do so in a brisk and businesslike fashion. When she came down Henri was emerging from the telephone booth. His face was impassive. And again when in time Sara Lee was to know Henri's face better than she had ever. . . Read More

What an amazing journey this novel is. Wildly improbably, ludicrously romanticized, but so heartfelt and absorbing nonetheless. I have really enjoyed discovering Mary Roberts Rinehart's works over the last few months, and I am amazed at the variety of writing she could do. Mystery, comedy, and th...more

This was an interesting story of a young American woman who wanted to help the soldiers during WWI prior to US involvement. It is interesting to see how forward thinking she is in the care of others in traveling and helping near the front, but how in her personal life she is not. A slow start, bu...more

Romantic adventure story, but far more than just a romance. Sara Lee, who is more in love with her Fiancee's picture than his person, feels compelled to leave 1914 Pittsburgh and travel to war-torn Belgium. She raises a little money and then founds a soup kitchen just behind the Belgian trenches....more

After a slow start I really got into this book. I wanted the heroine to stand up for herself more and so I had to keep reminding myself that's how women were back then.

Sara Lee is a young woman who decides to serve in the Red Cross in Belgium during World War I taking care of wounded soldiers. As she serves she starts to understand that her life is in The Amazing Interlude that we all must pass through to find ourselves.

It's so interesting reading a novel about World War 1 that was written around the same time, 1918! The Amazing Interlude by Mary Roberts Rinehart tells the story of a quiet, ordinary girl who has a niggling longing to do something that counts. But with a stubborn, bullish boyfriend and many odds...more
