The Albert Gate Mystery
Louis Tracy
Book Overview:
A new case for barrister and hobby detective Reginald Brett: The imperial diamonds were sent by the Sultan to London, to be cut in Albert Gate mansion by experts, all the while under the especial protection of the British government. One morning, however, the Turkish officials are found dead in the house, and the diamonds have vanished - despite the strict measures taken to protect them. The first suspicion falls on Jack Talbot, a young secretary at the Foreign Office, in whose charge this mission was, because he also disappeared without a trace on the same evening. Convinced that Talbot is innocent, his friend Lord Fairholme turns to Reginald Brett for help.

Three and a half stars.
Blimey! this Brett fellow is a bit too good to be true. He has the confidence of Scotland Yard, The Foreign Office, the French Police, the Italian Police and Uncle Tom Cobbley and all.
This is a rather silly "Boys Own" style of adventure yarn but strangely rather enjoyable neve
In a heavily guarded house four murders occur and the diamonds held there disappeared. Assistant Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office, Jack Talbot and man put in charge of proceedings has disappeared. The Earl of Fairholme, fiance to Miss Edith Talbot seeks the help of Reginald Brett, barrister and
Many of these period pieces can get quite convoluted, and this is no exception. I enjoy how the story builds, and gets more complicated as it proceeds, and the climactic ending is typically satisfying. I have several more Louis Tracy books in my "stash" but for now, this one made my day!
The Albert Gate Mystery (1904) brings a new case for the barrister detective Reginald Brett. This time it adds the spice of international intrigue and the thrill of adventure to horrific murder. And what seems to be a trend in Louis Tracy's work is again in evidence -- two lovers cannot marry while
This was an okay read. An independently wealthy detective is only *so* interesting, however.
