"Oh, it all sounds all right when you talk about it," he admitted, "but let's come to the crux of this thing now we are about it, Marcia. I am eating my heart out for you. I should have thought that one of the great privileges of your manner of life was your freedom to change, if you desired to do so. Change, I mean—nothing to do with infidelity. You may have the nicest feelings in the world towards your Marquis, but I don't believe you love him any more. I don't believe you care for him as much as you do for me."

"In one sense you are perfectly right," she acknowledged. "In another you are altogether wrong."

"And yet," he continued, almost roughly, "you have never allowed me to touch your fingers, much more your lips."

"But, my dear man," she remonstrated, "you must know that those things are impossible. I would kiss you willingly if you were my friend, and if you were content with that, but you know it wou. . . Read More

The book explores human emotions in all their glory, navigating its way through hate, resentment, treachery, angst, despair, melancholy, and of course, love. With a dying feudal and hierarchical system as a backdrop, the author has effectively painted a bitter story of a man's vengeance for the sake

Victorian read

Enjoyed the story line. Separation of classes was accepted and there were rules to abide by but the Marquis broke the rules. Loved the formal writing style with vocabulary you don't find in books today.

I don't judge this to be one of E. Phillips Oppenheim's better books. It starts out interestingly enough, but, for me, anyway, that interest was not held throughout. A wonderful book, great story, so well written. I enjoyed it from beginning to end.

Fun read of an English aristocrat, a poor daughter of the gardener, her father and a nephew. The Marquez takes the daughter as his companion lover and her father a religious fanatic becomes obsessed with the ruination of this man. They move to America where the nephew becomes rich with the help of t

Great book

This book is dated and not for everyone. It painted a picture of life long past. I enjoyed the book. The ending was satisfying.

I had never heard of E. Phillips Oppenheim before I came across a reference to him in A Way Through the Wood. In that book he's mentioned as an author of spy novels, and the narrator reflects that every intelligence agent he's ever met seems to be—consciously or unconsciously—imitating the character

A story of privilege and the attempt to keep what has been lost. The Marquis will go to any length to get enough money to enjoy his title, including forcing one of his daughters to marry an unsuitable candidate with money. Good character study and engaging plot.
