A String of Pearls

Book Overview:

The tale of Sweeney Todd has had many incarnations, most famously the stage and movie musical by Stephen Sondheim. But it all started in 1846 with a serialized telling of the story titled “The String of Pearls” in the weekly magazine “The People's Periodical and Family Library”. Called by some a romance, by others a horror story, it is one of the earliest murder mysteries. In “The String of Pearls”, Sweeney Todd is less sympathetic than in some of his later incarnations – a perfect villain, totally self-seeking with no redeeming qualities. How the deeds of Todd are uncovered and how he is brought to justice make a most intriguing tale, but one probably not suited for the very young and certainly not for the squeamish.

The pipe was filled, and the head chief held the bowl upwards, made a short speech and passed it to the next chief, who said a few words and handed it to the next. After all had received it and spoken, the chief, who presided lit the pipe, and all smoked. A small, dried bladder was produced after this by the chief. This was passed around with the same ceremony as the pipe was. Some very fine grass was next handed around in the same manner. After this the marrow from a large bone of the buffalo and a piece of plug tobacco were each served in the same manner as the other articles. The pipe, tobacco, grass and marrow were then placed in the bladder and tied up. When this was done the young chief who had charge of the party was asked to step into the circle of chiefs. The bladder and its contents were then held up by the presiding chief, who made a few re. . . Read More

Here's my interpretation of what this novel is about (spoilers ahead).

It's about industrialization and the plight of the poor. Mrs. Lovett's assistant works in a basement that he can't leave. He works with machines and gets barked orders from a disembodied voice (Lovett), as if the orders are coming

I really wish the writing style were less verbose. This would be a perfect if the pacing were better and 40% of this book were gone. Having not seen any adaptation of this book, I went into it hoping for a sensational story and I definitely got that, but I think the musical will take advantage of th

The String of Pearls is quite simply, pure reading pleasure, if a story about murders, enslavement, cannibalism, and a demented barber floats your boat. In this case, it certainly floats mine. The four stars I've given it here indicate my RFQ, or reading-fun quotient.

I have a wee bit about plot (an

This tale of mystery and horror features the infamous ‘demon barber’, Sweeney Todd. Lieutenant Thornhill goes into Todd’s shop never to be seen again- others also seem to have disappeared in the creepy barber’s shop. But what did he do with them? Col.
