. . .at they had done nothing wrong by their cowardice and deceit! There were, too, some mischievous men among the clergy, who had not wished Cyprian to be bishop, and had borne him a grudge ever since he was chosen. And now these clergymen set on the people who had lapsed (or fallen) in the persecution, to demand that they should be taken back into the Church, and to say that some martyrs had given them letters which entitled them to be admitted at once.

In those days it was usual, when any Christian was known to have been guilty of a heavy sin, that (as is said in our Commination service), he should be "put to open penance" by the Church; that is, that he should be required to show his repentance publicly. Persons who were in this state were not allowed to receive the holy sacrament of the Lord's Supper, as all other Christians then did very often. This is a book I’ll definitely have to reread to absorb everything. It was a slower read for me, but everything was quite fascinating. I enjoyed learning about the various heresies that also popped up as the years went by.

People need to read this

I liked this book because the Author was honest concerning both the Catholics and Protestants. And yet at the same time He was gentle with the criticism and rebuke. You just don't such displays of honesty and gentleness in modern Pastors much any more! No one gets 'sugar coat

A brief overview of Church history. So sad to see how the church degenerated over 1400 years. Do we need another reformation?

Great read

I was looking for an easy blueprint to early church history and honestly this was perfect. It did a great job at outlining the events that created the early church and molded it
