I loved this book until the very end, when I discovered it had been meant to be a 2-part series and instead Wilkie just left this single book twisting in the wind. I could exhume him and slap him.

This is a fascinating Victorian novel that has a bit of everything--utopian socialism, prostitution, gilded-age crooks, premarital sex, and sympathetic feminism.
