Zip, the Adventures of a Frisky Fox Terrier

Frances Trego Montgomery

Book Overview:

Zip, a little fox terrier, lives in the town of Maplewood in the house of his owner, Dr. Elsworth. Each day when Dr. Elsworth drives his carriage to visit his patients, Zip goes along with him so that he can keep the doctor company and, most importantly, visit with the other animals in the town. Zip likes to find out all the latest news so that he can tell it to his best friend, Tabby the cat, who also lives with Dr. Elsworth. However, he also finds himself getting into mischief, whether it's trying to solve a burglary, sneaking fried chicken from a picnic, getting stuck in a stovepipe or fighting with Peter-Kins the monkey. Zip is one dog who never has a dull day.

"Come with me until I get a drink and take a swim in the[Pg 18] watering trough to get off this mud, and then I will tell you my news. And be prepared for a big surprise."

"Land sakes!" exclaimed Tabby. "Who has gone and hung himself to the rafters of his barn? Or has someone's house burned down with them in it?"

"No, it is neither of those things, and you might as well stop guessing and prepare to listen to what I tell you, for you will never know it otherwise, as I am the only one in the whole village who knows all the ins and outs of the thing."

While they were talking, Zip was running from one end of the watering trough to the other, trying to wash the mud off his white coat. Tabby thoug. . . Read More

I really enjoyed this! It was interesting coming from Zip's point of view.. I could imagine it so well! :D A cute read for young readers.

This is a 1911 novelette about Zip, a fox terrier who solves a mystery, gets into mischief, and has all kinds of whacky misadventures with his friend, Tabby the cat, a monkey, and a turkey. Zip is a little busybody, too, a Gladys Kravitz if you will, sin

In which the misadventures of Zip, a good-hearted but very naughty terrier are described.
My 4, 6, and 8 year old children enjoyed listening to the Libra Vox audio edition of this book. I had a bit more trouble with it myself.
In a word, it was twaddle. Dull, uninspiring, dumbed-down. The dog is...more

I recently read about a wandering fox terrier, and when I was looking for something light and short last night, I noticed this title about a frisky fox terrier. I know a hint when I see one, so off I went with Zip, who was the doctor's dog in a little village called Maplewood.

Zip is a clever, mischievous fox terrier who causes all kinds of trouble. This tale, which includes a monkey, a parrot, a BFF kitty, and several mice, comes from an era when "darkie" is an acceptable descriptive term for domestic help and hobos are all thieves, but the stories themselves would se...more
