This was Walpole's first novel, and it's fair to say he hadn't quite got into his stride. The characters a bit cardboard, and he is inclined to tell where he might have shown. Having said that, it's immensely readable with some very strong women - Dahlia and Aunt Clare especially. Garrett the useles
