Wintry Peacock

D. H. Lawrence

Book Overview:

An early selection of stories from one of Britain’s best-loved writers, The Wintry Peacock is a powerful portrayal of the devastating effects of the First World War.Disillusioned in his role as a husband and father, Egbert strives to find his identity as a soldier. Yet the brutality of war leaves no room for such romantic notions, and everything that Egbert sought to avoid is suddenly visited upon him with renewed urgency. So begins the first in a series of stories in which men and women struggle to reconcile the demands of family and freedom in the midst of injuries and deaths, infidelities, and absences brought on by the Great War.

My thoughts are with you always, I think of nothing but you, I live for nothing but you and our dear baby. If you do not come back to me soon, I shall die, and our child will die. But no, you cannot come back to me. But I can come to you. I can come to England with our child. If you do not wish to present me to your good mother and father you can meet me in some town, some city, for I shall be so frightened to be alone in England with my child, and no one to take care of us. Yet I must come to you, I must bring my child, my little Alfred, to his father, the big, beautiful Alfred that I love so much. Oh, write and tell me where I shall come. I have some money. I am not a penniless creature. I have money for myself and my dear baby——"

Four stories from the painfully class-conscious Lawrence which do have moments of interest & involvement. But they fail to sparkle & shine, despite Lawrence's frantic attempts to write about the sexual gulfs between both men & women, & wealthy & impoverished. A story about the infedility of a soldier and the insecurities of his wife

Enjoyable collection of short stories. The writing is perceptive and honest.

I’m a big fan of DH Lawrence, and if I’d finished the horribly pretentious foreword, I probably could describe what I like about him. As it is, I’ll settle for the sheer intensity of everything that he writes. Even apparently minor incidents are full of meaning, while he describes the trajectories o
