این کتاب در واقع داستان مواجهه تولستوی با پدیده فقر و تنگدستی در شهر مسکو است. تولستوی نحوه برخورد خود با این پدیده را به قلم آورده و از راه‌هایی سخن گفته که وی برای ریشه کن کردن فقر و تندگستی در شهری چون مسکو بکار برده است و با توجه به ناکامی خود در این راه با روایت آن خاطرات به نقد رویکرد خود در ق
چه باید کرد؟ بحثی پرشور از بی عدالتی جامعه و اقتصاد مدرن است. این اثر از تحقیقات تولستوی در مورد مناطق فقیر نشین مسکو، در حین کار برای سرشماری در سال 1882 الهام گرفته شده است. تولستوی در کتاب انسان دوستی را بیهوده و بی‌اثر می‌داند و ساختار جامعه را به عنوان یک کل مورد انتقاد قرار می دهد.

من تولستوی رو دوست دارم. ساده و عمیق حرف میزنه. دغدغه هاش رو دوست دارم. من دوستش دارم چون رودربایستی با خودش و مخاطب نداره. میگه «یه وقتی به خودم قول دادم تا حد ممکن آدم صادقی باشم، سعی کنم همیشه راست بگم» من فکر میکنم متعهد هست به این قول و مخاطب این رو درک میکنه که اگر نویسنده یک دغدغه ی درونی رو

This is a brilliant book that recounts Tolstoy's personal journey in his quest to rid Moscow of it's underclass. Ha. Easier said than done.
He finds that despite unive
