Two wealthy families are neighbors in Elizabethan England; one is staunchly Catholic and the other is devoutly Protestant. The attractive young scions of the families are drawn to each other in friendship and love, but are kept apart by their opposing religions. Life is very difficult for Catholics during those times. They are subject to fines, imprisonment, torture and ignominious death for practicing their faith. On the other hand, for various reasons some Catholics give up their inherited faith, and even betray and persecute their fellow-religionists. As the threads of plot are woven tighter, heroes emerge, sometimes most unexpectedly, as they grapple with theological doubts and conflicts, and undergo extreme suffering and loss. The many characters we meet ring true, whether they are brilliant or superstitious, stalwart or wavering, pious or violent; and it is a great privilege to spend time with such towering historical figures as St. Edmond Campion and Queen Elizabeth herself. Love, history, theology, suspense, and an array of colorful characters are sewn inexorably together in this large and compelling story.
urious struggles to rescue his wife.

"Take your sister home," said Mr. Norris to Anthony; and they saw him slip off and pass his arm through the Rector's, and bend down his handsome kindly face to the minister's staring eyes and moving lips as he too led him homewards.

Even Anthony was hushed and impressed, and hardly spoke a word until he and Isabel turned off down the little dark lane to the Dower House.

"We could do nothing," he said, "father and I—until Lady Maxwell came."

"No," said Isabel softly, "she only could have done it."

CHAPTER X

A CONFESSOR

Sir Nicholas and the party were lodged at East Grinsted the night of their arrest, in the magistrate's house. Although he was allowed privacy in his room, after he had given his word of honour not to attempt an escape, yet he was allowed no conversation with Mr. Stewart or his own servant except in the presence of the magistrate or one of the pursuivants; and Mr. Stewart, since he was personally unknown to the magistrate, and since the charge against him was graver, was not on any account allowed to be alone for a moment, even in the room in which he slept. The following day they all rode on to London, and the two prisoners were lodged in the Marshalsea. This had been for a long while the place where Bishop Bonner was confined; and where Catholic prisoners were often sent immediately after their arrest; and Sir Nicholas at any rate found to his joy that he had several old friends among the prisoners. He was confined in a separate room; but by the kindness of his gaoler whom he bribed profusely as the custom was, through his servant, he had many opportunities of meeting the others; and even of approaching the sacraments and hearing mass now and then.

He began a letter to his wife on the day of his arrival and finished it the ne

This was fantastic. the way the author entwines characters is wonderful. His descriptions were so moving. The individual story of Anthony and Isabel's conversion meeting at the end on Easter is so beautiful. His characters are very well portrayed: Mary, Hubert, Sir Nicholas, Anthony, Isabel, and man

The book has been very interesting and enjoyable.
I knew about the persecution of Catholics in the time of Elizabeth I (and later), and it was good to read a book describing it. This is something many English people don't know about. Their school texts on history probably don't mention it.

ENGLISH: This novel should be compared to Come Rack! Come Rope! by the same author, which deals with the same historical period (the time of Elizabeth I of England) and with the same subject (the persecution of Catholic priests). This novel seems to me a) less staggering and b) not so well

An enticing and inspiring novel. Puts you in the heart and mind of Catholics in Elizabethan England. You can really see Benson wrote this from the heart. The sentiments and experiences of a convert shine through, as well as the hopes and prayers of a priest. Beautifully written and educational in th

Now THIS is what a Catholic novel should be. Robert Hugh Benson tells a stirring, heroic tale of Catholics under Queen Elizabeth I. The characters are beautifully delineated; they live and breathe still in my mind, eighteen hours after the book was finished. Somewhat to my surprise, I found the conf

Though written a century ago, this is as readable - and as well paced - as any modern novel. In my estimation it competes on equal terms with Hillary Mantell's "Wolf Hall". It is even-handed but unflinching in its portrayal of the nightmare choices the Reformation forced on people of principle, whet
