Stanley Grauman Weinbaum

Book Overview:

Sequal to Martian of Odyssey, Valley of Dreams is the tale of two weeks before the Ares is scheduled to leave Mars, Captain Harrison sends American chemist Dick Jarvis and French biologist "Frenchy" Leroy to retrieve the film Jarvis took before his auxiliary rocket crashed into the Thyle highlands the week before. Along the way, the Earthmen stop at the city of the cart creatures and the site of the pyramid building creature for Leroy to take some samples. After picking up the film canisters from the crashed rocket at Thyle II, the two men fly east to Thyle I to look for signs of the birdlike Martian, Tweel.

Leroy found a stick and knocked 'em off, and each branch broke away and became a biopod crawling around with the others. So he poked around at the creature, while I looked away from it; even dead, that rope-armed devil gave me the creeps. And then came the surprise; the thing was part plant!"

"C'est vrai!" confirmed the biologist. "It's true!"

"It was a big cousin of the biopods," continued Jarvis. "Leroy was quite excited; he figures that all Martian life is of that sort—neither plant nor animal. Life here never differentiated, he says; everything has both natures in it, even the barrel-creatures—even Tweel! Chemist Dick Jarvis and French biologist Pierre Leroy venture out to the surface to salvage a set of films that were lost when Jarvis’s auxiliary rocke

The sequel to "A Martian Odyssey" gives us a lot more background on the Martians and their history. It's just as imaginative as the first story, though the big reveal near the end is a big trope nowadays, and in my mind makes this one age a bit less well than Odyssey.

Pretty good. Kind of an odd story. There are some good starting points here, but very little resolved. It does do a good job of dumping you right into the story, without stopping to explain everything, which I rather enjoyed. You learned about the world more organically.

This is the sequel to "A Martian Odyssey" and most of the familiar characters make yet another appearance. Although this story lacks some of the originality from the first part, it still has some interesting ideas and provides an entertaining read.
