In post-Soviet Kyiv, burned former operative Andriy Sokol is forced into an off-book extraction with no institutional support after the Service that disgraced him turns his only surviving source into a controlled asset. Under an NGO consultant cover, he moves through market stairwells and dead drops while the city spreads the lie that he sold out to warlord Baran.

When guards threaten the block and the source is moved again, Andriy has to trace the route through canteen meetings, archive ledgers, and a canal cache before Baran’s people can silence Bohdan for good. The Unseen Paymaster drives its asset-extraction and mole-hunt suspense through one brutal fact: Baran controls police and finances, while a rumor network inside Andriy’s own circle keeps every contact under suspicion.

Andriy’s flaw is not recklessness but isolation—he trusts paper and procedure before he trusts the people standing beside him, so he keeps aiming his doubt at the wrong ally, Kateryna, just as her off-book help becomes indispensable. As Petro’s defection, Bohdan’s confession, and the Service’s buried files collide, Andriy has to choose between rescuing the source and exposing the memo that proves his own ruin was engineered. The cost is losing the last official bridge to the truth.
