The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon

Washington Irving

Book Overview:

Apart from "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" - the pieces which made both Irving and The Sketch Book famous - other tales include "Roscoe", "The Broken Heart", "The Art of Book-making", "A Royal Poet", "The Spectre Bridegroom", "Westminster Abbey", "Little Britain", and "John Bull". His stories were highly influenced by German folktales, with "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" being inspired by a folktale recorded by Karl Musaus. Stories range from the maudlin (such as "The Wife" and "The Widow and Her Son") to the picaresque ("Little Britain") and the comical ("The Mutability of Literature"), but the common thread running through The Sketch Book - and a key part of its attraction to readers - is the personality of Irving's pseudonymous narrator, Geoffrey Crayon. Erudite, charming, and never one to make himself more interesting than his tales, Crayon holds The Sketch Book together through the sheer power of his personality - and Irving would, for the rest of his life, seamlessly enmesh Crayon's persona with his own public reputation. That such men should give prejudicial accounts of America, is not a matter of surprise. The themes it offers for contemplation, are too vast and elevated for their capacities. The national character is yet in a state of fermentation: it may have its frothiness and sediment, but its ingredients are sound and wholesome; it has already given proofs of powerful and generous qualities; and the whole promises to settle down into something substantially excellent. But the causes which are operating to strengthen and ennoble it, and its daily indications of admirable properties, are all lost upon these purblind observers; who are only affected by the little asperities incident to its present situation. They are capable of judging only of the surface of things; of those matters which come in contact with their p. . . Read More

The stories (Rip Van Winkle, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, etc.) are all good. Everyone should read Irving's stories. The travel essays, on the other hand, were nothing but snooze-worthy. They were so bad and so numerous that they overbalanced the stories for me and threw my overall rating of the boo

Çok beğendim. Washington Irving yeni dünyanın kırsallarında eski Avrupa'nın karanlık unsurlarını çok güzel sergiliyor. Dilinden, kurgusundan neredeyse Poe kadar keyif aldım. Gotik seviyorsanız kaçırmayın :)

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow & Other Macabre Tales is a collection of short stories by Washington Irving. I liked some stories better than others, but overall I’m giving the book 4 stars. The review that follows is only for the short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”

When I was about 14 years old I went to the first slumber party of my life at a school friends'. It was Halloween and the large living room was greatly decorated (which was gloriously exotic to me since Halloween, back then, was hardly known in Germany). I only remember one movie from that night; it

Halloween classic. Irving was a bit of a windy fellow, but I enjoyed the stories nonetheless.

Prose writers are voluminous and unwieldy; their pages crowded with commonplaces, and their thoughts expanded into tediousness.

I am a child of Sleepy Hollow, New York, and I have lived in Irving’s shadow almost as long as I can remember.

Every Halloween, this town is inundated with tourists, who
