The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon

Washington Irving

Book Overview:

Apart from "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" - the pieces which made both Irving and The Sketch Book famous - other tales include "Roscoe", "The Broken Heart", "The Art of Book-making", "A Royal Poet", "The Spectre Bridegroom", "Westminster Abbey", "Little Britain", and "John Bull". His stories were highly influenced by German folktales, with "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" being inspired by a folktale recorded by Karl Musaus. Stories range from the maudlin (such as "The Wife" and "The Widow and Her Son") to the picaresque ("Little Britain") and the comical ("The Mutability of Literature"), but the common thread running through The Sketch Book - and a key part of its attraction to readers - is the personality of Irving's pseudonymous narrator, Geoffrey Crayon. Erudite, charming, and never one to make himself more interesting than his tales, Crayon holds The Sketch Book together through the sheer power of his personality - and Irving would, for the rest of his life, seamlessly enmesh Crayon's persona with his own public reputation. That such men should give prejudicial accounts of America, is not a matter of surprise. The themes it offers for contemplation, are too vast and elevated for their capacities. The national character is yet in a state of fermentation: it may have its frothiness and sediment, but its ingredients are sound and wholesome; it has already given proofs of powerful and generous qualities; and the whole promises to settle down into something substantially excellent. But the causes which are operating to strengthen and ennoble it, and its daily indications of admirable properties, are all lost upon these purblind observers; who are only affected by the little asperities incident to its present situation. They are capable of judging only of the surface of things; of those matters which come in contact with their p. . . Read More

All due respect to Irving for being possibly the first American writer to be able to earn a living by writing; it’s not easy being one of the first, as you usually have only your own experiences and mistakes to learn from. The most famous of the fifteen stories in this collection are “Rip Van Win

Delightfully written, this classic American folktale recounts the exploits of schoolmaster Ichabod Crane during his brief stay in the cozy little town of Sleepy Hollow. The town is wrought however, with ghost stories dangling upon the lips of its citizens and goblins lurking in every

The legends and tales of Dutch-colonial New York inspired Washington Irving to his greatest literary achievements; he took key elements from America’s colonial and Revolutionary heritage, combined them with age-old traditions of world folklore, and set down stories that became a vital part of the em

Prose writers are voluminous and unwieldy; their pages crowded with commonplaces, and their thoughts expanded into tediousness.

I am a child of Sleepy Hollow, New York, and I have lived in Irving’s shadow almost as long as I can remember.

Every Halloween, this town is inundated with tourists, who
