Rick joined Scotty on a wooden bench. "I expected a barbed-wire fence. But there's no fence at all."

"The whole desert is a fence, I guess," Scotty surmised. "The only access roads are probably guarded, and the only other ways to get into the base would be by foot or horseback. No one could make it on foot, and anyone on horseback would attract instant attention."

Scotty probably was right, Rick thought. Still, it wasn't at all what he expected.

I love these mysteries, but this one is my favorite! I had no clue that he was going to get stuck in the rocket. Trying to figure out who the earthman was was very fun. It would be very scary to get stuck in a ghost town where hardly anyone goes, and you have to wait for somebody to come and find yo

Rick and Scott head out west to help find out who is sabotaging some rocket testing. While doing so, Rick accidently gets locked inside a rocket and becomes the first person to go into space.


Excellent mystery and very exciting.
Its been so long since I read this that almost nothing except Rick being in the rocket at launch seemed familiar. It was like reading the book for the first time.
The bad guys were surprising and much more complex than most of these books.

Fun adventure with lots of action. Mystery keeps you going for an unusual conclusion. Series has lots of excellent adventures.

The Scarlet Lake Mystery is the thirteenth Rick Brant adventure, and is one of my favorites in the series. It was published in 1958, a most excellent year if I do say so myself. Rick and Scotty go to work on a project at an experimental rocket installation in Nevada with Dr. Gordon in order to try t

Definitely one of the more interesting Rick Brant adventures. The rocket described is very close to the much-later Space Shuttle, and the remote-control-from-ground aspect reminds me of the Russian Buran (itself modeled after the Space Shuttle).
