Riders of the Silences

Max Brand

Book Overview:

The Great West, prior to the century's turn, abounded in legend. Stories were told of fabled gunmen whose bullets always magically found their mark, of mighty stallions whose tireless gallop rivaled the speed of the wind, of glorious women whose beauty stunned mind and heart. But nowhere in the vast spread of the mountain-desert country was there a greater legend told than the story of Red Pierre and the phantom gunfighter, McGurk.

These two men of the wilderness, so unalike, of widely-differing backgrounds, had in common a single trait: each was unbeatable. Fate brought them clashing together, thunder to thunder, lightning to lightning. They were destined to meet at the crossroads of a long, long trail ... a trail which began in the northern wastes of Canada and led, finally, to a deadly confrontation in the mountains of the Far West.

Pierre came from behind and stood over her unnoticed. He saw that the oncoming tree, by a strange chance, had knocked down the girl and pinned her legs to the ground. His strength and the strength of a dozen men would not be sufficient to release her. This he saw at the first glance, and saw the bright gold of her hair against the snow. Then he dropped on his knees beside her.

CHAPTER VIII BELIEF

The girl tossed up her arms in a silent ecstasy, and Pierre caught the small cold hands and saw that she was only a child of twelve or fourteen, lovely as only a child can be, and still more beautiful with the wild storm sweeping over her and the waste of snow around them.

Started as a Western, but ends as a romance.

The story starts as a Western, but ends??????? You will have to decide. The author had a fair western, but in the middle he must have put a dress on and finished as a girly story. Not worth the time.

A first rate western!

Pierre, brought up by a kindly priest since infancy, is about to enter the priesthood when he suddenly finds out that he does have a biological father who is an outlaw. The father gave him up to the priest to raise when his mistress died (because he knew his wife would murder the baby if he brought

Narrative is well written in precise English while characters speak colloquially. Outstanding and fast-paced narrative. This book was originally published in 1920 and although it has been out of print for a long time it ought to be republished for post modern readers. While I am new to reading weste

Great book.

No one delves into psycological side of his characters like Max Brand. His are not jusr stories, they let us feel the misery of the of the desperate lonely people of the west. He does not glorify his characters, but lets see the struggles.
