The children were all brought up strictly and were never allowed to appear at Court until a comparatively late age. They were all taught to use their hands as well as their heads, and at Osborne, in the Swiss cottage, the boys worked at carpentering and gardening, while the girls were employed in learning cooking and housekeeping. Christmas was always celebrated in splendid fashion by the family, and the royal children were always encouraged to give as presents something which they had made with their own hands. Lessons in riding, driving, and swimming also formed part of their training, for the Queen was wise enough to realize that open-air exercise was very necessary for the health of her children.

Partly it is the subject, but also the time when it was written, which I believe was 1915. The language was different and to read it is quite refreshing, considering the modern day way we communicate.

More prose than history, but an enjoyable read.

If you seek a historic account, you'll be disappointed. This is more of a tribute to the queen, as documented in her correspondence and observations of those who knew her. Easy read and good prose.

This book is not a biography so much as a tribute. I came here looking for some brief background to give context to the Masterpiece miniseries, and this was good enough for that purpose. It is, indeed, brief. However, the book does not give a good record of the queen's accomplishments or activities.
