The adage "2+2=5" is popularly attributed to George Orwell in his novel "1984," but it was actually in Victor Hugo's "Napoleon le Petit" that the phrase was first used to embody how truth is whatever an authoritarian regime says it is.

This is not a novel, but a political hit-piece in which Hugo spel

Pas très bon d'avoir un homme comme Hugo pour ennemi !

A very interesting read on Napoleon III, for a biography/ historical style book, quite heavy in parts to get through, enjoyable though.
