Volumns 1 through 3. I really like M E Braddon's books because I can usually tell what is going to happen within the first 3 chapters of a book. Ms Braddon's books are always different from what I expect in romance books. This book is romance, mystery,murder, christian and the best part lost love. T

Emotional blackmail and a priggish morality lay the road open to two broken hearts and an unhappy marriage. Add to it jealousy, a sense of drunken propriety and murder and pretty much all of Braddon’s tale is told.

Great work of tragedy. The cruelest romance I’ve ever read. From the beginning the author was contriving new ways to separate the two main characters in this book. There was a romance in the beginning but it all went down hill from there and there is no happy ending.

Reviewing all 3 Volumes, because they do not stand alone. Rather slow moving, even for Braddon. Christabel, a beautiful young heiress, has been brought up properly by her wealthy aunt.
