The writing style is very abrupt and unsentimental for it's era and there are portions of dialogue where it can be difficult to distinguish who is speaking which is something of a stylist trademark for Stoddard. I happen to find these characteristics add to the complexity of her work though it's pro

I read this story in class. I think it is very important for the end of this story to think about if Lemorne is correct in her conclusion. Does money really corrupt love? Will she be able to accept her lover's love? Or will this thought be too much for her to bear, and end up ruining her happy endin

Oh boy! I didn't see that ending coming. I must confess that till about 99.99% of the story, I was convinced I was wasting my time reading this. It was just another of those, rich-old-harpy-oppressing-her-poor-mousy-relative kind of stories that were so common during Victorian times.

This was written during my college literature review course... wow, that's some 'interesting' thoughts...
I had never heard of Elizabeth Stoddard before seeing her name in our anthology of American literature. I looked forward to reading her work, until I started reading it.
