Then, for a time, there was a clacking and thumping as he typed random letters, peeping out of the suitcase to see what he had typed, until the sheet I had put in was used up.

I replaced it and waited, as patiently as I could, smoking one of the last of my cigarettes. After fifteen minutes or so, he had the hang of it pretty well. He typed:

YOU DAMQXXX DAMN FOOL WHUXXX WHY DID YOU LEAQNXXX LEAVE ME ALONE Q Q

“Aw, Arthur,” I said. “Use your head, will you? I couldn’t carry that old typewriter of yours all the way down through the Bronx. It was getting pretty beat-up. Anyway, I’ve only got two hands—”

Gobbled up this sci-fi tale to clear the "literary sci-fi" I'd just read out of my brain. A quick, fun read which holds up decently, but might have been even better fleshed out further.

A machine takes control of its ship and begins to bully its human crew.

Pohl's short story has the germ of a good idea, which is realised through the increasing paranoia of Arthur.

An enjoyable short story about making the most of your situation post apocalypse, it'll entertain and put a smile on your face.

I listened to this novella today, and thought it was fun. It's not very serious work, and there aren't many things here that I haven't come across in sci fi before, but it is done with some humor. A fun, post-apocalypse tall... what would your ideal place be to start civilization anew? How about the Queen Elizabeth?

Sturdy and imaginative, this post-apocalyptic tale makes for good, spoon-fed entertainment, so long as you take it on its own terms and accept that it was probably serialized for a pulp SF magazine before being published as a novella.
