Island Nights' Entertainments

Robert Louis Stevenson

Book Overview:

A marvelous depiction of two sides of South Sea Islands' life through three separate tales. One, the experience of the incoming British keen to live free and exploit the innocent; the other the supernatural as perceived by Stevenson working in the lives of the natives. One tale carries the germ of the story of Madame Butterfly, since become a part of Western culture. Another is an extraordinary retelling of a German horror story transposed to a South Sea Island setting. The last is an effort of the pure Stevensonian imagination and there can be nothing better.

“They won’t go near me?  What do you mean by that?  Why won’t they go near me?” I cried.

Case hesitated.  “Seems they’re frightened,” says he, in a low, voice.

I stopped dead short.  “Frightened?” I repeated.  “Are you gone crazy, Case?  What are they frightened of?”

“I wish I could make out,” Case answered, shaking his head.  “Appears like one of their tomfool superstitions.  That’s what I don’t cotton to,” he said.  “It’s like the business about Vigours.”

“I’d like to know what you mean by that, and I’ll trouble you to tell me,” says I.

“Well, you know, Vigours lit out and left all standing,” said he.  “It was some superstition business—I never got the hang of it . . . Read More

This is a delightful read full of adventures through the South Seas yet again showing the amazing talent Robert Louis Stevenson has for storytelling. By far the greatest story in it is "The Bottle Imp" and it is worth picking up this book if just to read that one story. It is a rather mysterious and

The Bottle Imp is FANTASTIC, 4.5 stars without a doubt. I didn’t like any of the other stories even a little bit. Remarkably, surprisingly bad for RLS.

This book has long struggled for a name and an audience. "Island Nights' Entertainments" is the elegant but awkward alternate name for Robert Louis Stevenson's "South Sea Tales." It is often misprinted as "An Island Night's Entertainment" or other variations. Under its other title, the book becomes

I really like Stevenson. He has a talent for making interesting characters--eaten up with both evil and good, and hardly sure of either. I also enjoyed learning more about the British colonies in the South Pacific, and these stories well exhibit Stevenson's familiarity with the place. (As I understa

Not his best. Some interesting moments but better skimmed than fully read

These stories are charming and captivating, if you can find them under Stevenson's clipped and colloquial style. And I am surprised that The Ebb-Tide, with its melodramatic plot, hasn't been made into a film.

A collection of eight short stories, all taking place in the South Seas. Most involve sailing ships, hurricanes, and the collection of natives to work various enterprises in the islands during the early 20th Century. A really quick read, most of the stories are exciting with hard to predict endings.

This collection contains two novellas, "The Ebb Tide" and The Beach of Falseá, which are realistic fiction dealing with themes of imperialism and corruption. It also contains several short stories, which are set in the Pacific islands, and have fantasy themes. Stevenson's work written while he lived
