How He Lied to Her Husband

George Bernard Shaw

Book Overview:

Now if you only knew the least little thing about the world, Henry, you'd know that in a large family, though the sisters quarrel with one another like mad all the time, yet let one of the brothers marry, and they all turn on their unfortunate sister-in-law and devote the rest of their lives with perfect unanimity to persuading him that his wife is unworthy of him. They can do it to her very face without her knowing it

. . .These are the people who declare that it is feminine vice and not poverty that drives women to the streets, as if vicious women with independent incomes ever went there. These are the people who, indulgent or indifferent to aphrodisiac plays, raise the moral hue and cry against performances of Mrs Warren's Profession, and drag actresses to the police court to be insulted, bullied, and threatened for fulfilling their engagements. For please observe that the judicial decision in New York State in favor of the play does not end the matter. In Kansas City, for instance, the municipality, finding itself restrained by the courts from preventing the performance, fell back on a local bye-law against indecency to evade the Constitution of the United States. They summoned the actress who impersonated Mrs Warren to the police court, and offered her and her colleagues the alternative of leaving the city or being prosecuted under this bye-law.

Shortly before reading this play, I read a one-act play by Tennessee Williams. I didn't particularly like it, but it's still better than this one.

I thought this young man's character was rather stupid. It's almost cold and poetic in a silly way. Bernard Shaw was making fun of his own play Candida,

Great short little play, which we saw recently. Twists and turns between a woman, her lover and her husband.

Fantastic, outstanding

As far as short comedies go, this is top-shelf, knock-you on-your-ass-faster-than-a-punch-from-a-heavyweight-boxer stuff. It helps to see a proper performance of the thing, but not everyone has time for all that flapdoodle. Anyway, don't take my word for it. Shaw's work has always been rather adept

How He Lied to Her Husband:-

I seem to have lost a review of this play, a most favourite one, that I remember - vividly - writing, only a few weeks ago about this play, and while this is not the first time it has happened it is difficult to think of how it could have.

Yet another prime example of George Bernard Shaw's excellent skill at writing. And, also, another great look at how to write a good short play. This is probably the shortest play of the short plays that I've read- taking me a record of 30 minutes to read!- but something stands out in this play betwe

A simple, yet interesting drama, running on the lines of infidelity, budding romance, and the fear of being caught by the better half. A short drama, but every scenario brings sheer pleasure to the reader. The husband of the lady,is the character who in my opinion, embellishes the comic element( for bei
