Hermann and Dorothea
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Book Overview:
There are few modern poems of any country so perfect in their kind as the "Hermann and Dorothea" of Goethe. In clearness of characterization, in unity of tone, in the adjustment of background and foreground, in the conduct of the narrative, it conforms admirably to the strict canons of art; yet it preserves a freshness and spontaneity in its emotional appeal that are rare in works of so classical a perfection in form.

Under the guise of an adorable idyll, Goethe implants a deep critical view of the idea of war and a powerful message: in hardships interhuman relationships are what get you through them.
"Hermann und Dorothea" is an epic poem written in hexameter in nine songs. It represents an attempt by Goethe to create a genuinely German modern epic in the Homeric mode. Goethe was long a student of Homer's Iliad, which is clearly the principle inspiration for this work, and delved heavily into th

A successful attempt by Goethe to create a classical epic style in German. Some aspects recall Homer: e.g. epithets, appeal to the Muse, unrhymed hexameter verse. However, this is a domestic drama not a tale of war or sea travel (as are the settings of the Iliad and the Odyssey). It is also much sho
