Edna Ferber wrote mostly in the 1920s. I came across her work merely by chance, and I am shocked that she is not more popular. She has an amazing insight into the human experience, in much the same way as Jhumpa Lahiri. Her characters are incredibly real, and she has a very modern sense of humor.

This book of nine short stories by Edna Ferber tells about life in Midwest USA in the era of WWI.

Short stories based on the WWI era and often set in the Illinois / Wisconsin area. I was so pleased to see a short story that was a sequel to the Emma McChesney novellas I read earlier. Unfortunately, it ended on a somewhat racist note. I wish the scene had just never been written.

This book is a compilation of short stories that take you into the heart of the midwest in and around the war years (WW1). Although the book provides a snapshot of day, there is such a thing as culture and universality that is still applicable today.

Half Portions is a collection of short stories set before/during/after WW1 in small town America. I enjoyed some stories more than others but overall, most held my interest. I confess to skimming parts of two.
